Forming New Habits - 21 Days at a Time

All of the information I find on the internets tell me that it takes 21 days to form a new habit.  Theoretically, this is manageable.  I mean, who can't take 3 weeks out of their life to commit to a new daily habit?

Me.  That's who.  I cannot do it.  I have the best of intentions.  I make charts, color-code, write reminders, download productivity apps, the whole nine yards.  I start out great for the first couple of days then my new habit always vanishes.  Sometimes it's an abrupt end, like my great intentions to do some daily barre-inspired exercises.  Other times it slowly fades off in to existence, like my commitment to do at least a load of laundry each day.  Then, there are habits th
at I seem to completely forget about.  Like this here little blog of mine.  I have the greatest of intentions.  I have all these ideas of things I want to write about and share with people.  I start projects, and sometimes even finish them, but they never make their way on to the blog.

I think a lot of my problem is that at the end of the day, I am truly a perfectionist.  I have fallen in to the trap of comparing my rundown little home to the homes of people who have been renovating for years and have created a dream home.  I want to have these dramatic room reveals, but at the end of the day we are living on a one-income salary and cannot afford to do these major renovations all at once.

When I look around our home, we really have made significant progress. We are miles away from our original starting point.  I need to work on being proud of the progress we have made, instead of being frustrated by the never-ending list of projects I have left to do.

In that spirit, I am committing to forming new habits as well as forming new thoughts.  For the next 21 days, I am going to write a blog post every 3 days.  I will finally write about the things we have accomplished since moving in here almost a year ago.  I will show the in-progress shots that resemble NOTHING like the before shots I've shared throughout this post.  I will be proud of the progress I have made, instead of feeling frustrated because my home doesn't look exactly like my dream home yet.  At the end of my 21 day habit forming, I should have 7 new blog articles.  They may only be small projects.  They may be little tweaks I've made since my sporadic earlier posts.  But I'm committing to this little blog I started, because what I want more than anything is a place to look back on everything that I *HAVE* accomplished and maybe my baby steps towards progress can inspire others who are in the rut that I've been finding myself in, where I feel like nothing is a big enough change or the room isn't yet perfect enough to share.  Wish me luck!!
